Slow Food Seattle Volunteer Opportunity: Cook at Fisher House

Slow Food Seattle Volunteers at the Fisher House

Slow Food Seattle Volunteers at the Fisher House

We are happy to announce  our next Slow Food volunteer activity: we're putting out the call today for 2-3 volunteers to join us to cook a community meal at the VA Puget Sound Fisher House on Tuesday, October 25th.

If you're not familiar with the Fisher House system, they are places where families can stay while their military relatives are being treated at the VA.

Community meals are a way to help the families save a little on their food budget during their stay, and also are a way for the community to express appreciation for veteran's service.

It's also a very fun way to come together with people to cook for a cause. Feeding people delicious food is always a rewarding experience, and helping vet families enjoy a special meal during what can be a stressful time (and save them the time and cost of preparing their own meal) is especially gratifying! (For a report back on our last time at Fisher House in Oct 2015, see this post.)

We're looking for 2-4 folks to help prepare buffet-style meal. We'll provide the recipes and ingredients; you'll come ready to get cookin'! No special skills are required, just being generally comfortable with basic kitchen tasks like chopping, mixing, sautéing, etc.

We aim to have the meal prepared by 5:30pm for the houseguests, so would like volunteers to arrive no later than 4pm. The meal is served for the houseguests to eat on their own schedule, which can vary due to visiting hours, so once we prepare, set it out, and clean up, volunteers will be free to go, usually between 6:30-7pm.

A special feature of this event is the opportunity to cook with our board member and chef Varin Keokitvon (of Heartwood Provisions). (For an idea of the kind of delicious stuff Varin puts together, check out his Instagram feed.)
If you are interested or would like more information, please email volunteer@slowfoodseattle.org. If we have more interest than spots, we'll follow up to let you know the volunteer spots are filled but will also give you info on how you can schedule your own volunteer day with friends, family or any other community groups you might be a part of.
